Dr Bill ran a weekly support program of education, information and fellowship called H.O.P.E. Ministries, (Honesty, Openness, Prayer, Encouragement). He began to specialize in the work of what he calls S.O.R.T (Sexual Orientation Resolution Therapy)- with Christians who are managing and resolving Same-Sex Attarction. He wrote the book Homosexual No More in l991 which came out in Spanish as NO MAS HOMOSEXUAL and Tagelu (Philippines) and has contributed several articles to Christian journals.
His position on the issue of SSA is that there is no "cure" but rather a "Resolution". People must learn to live with it (rather than for it or against it) in a biblically faithful and morally acceptable way. He holds to the BEM theory of causality, (see website), and that SSA is caused primarily by family, peers, and several other environmental experiences early in life. He outlines this by a six stage developmental schema of low-self esteem, gender emptiness, gender attraction, sexual attraction, sexual reenforcement, homosexual identity.
It was in l970 that he was reading the third chapter of John's gospel one late summer night. He said that he couldn't go to sleep. God had him on His mind. He was reading the story of Jesus and his conversation with Nicodemus. He said, "The Lord used the very words he spoke to Nicodemus to bring me to new life through the Holy Spirit. Without even knowing what it meant to be born-again; it happened that night. Of course, that revolutionized my whole life and my way of working with others. And so as a therapist and counselor in private practice, when the first Christian man came to seek help for his struggle with SSA, I was eager to help him in the way in which the Lord wanted him to be helped. In retrospect, I now know that this was part of the Father's plan for both this young man and for me as well." Some years later he became a Board Member and Northeast regional representative of the former Exodus International (now defunct).
Dr Bill received his MSW from University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work (1966) and MDiv and DMin degrees in pastoral counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary, Newburgh, IN (1980). For 27 years he was Associate Professor of Clinical Social Work,(retired 1996) at Southern CT State University; and was a Christian therapist working almost exclusively with SSA people. He has authored nine books of poetry (Spiritual Friends), several books of theology and devotion (The Way of Christ, The Love of the Trinity), and the novel The Captive Island. His latest book is "Resolving Same-sex Attraction". All his books are available on Amazon.
He is married to his wife Linda for 56 years at this writing (2022). They have two married daughters and six grandchildren. He says, "The Lord gave me a personal verse of Scripture which I have come to value as most precious, and which is the guiding light of my life.".
"And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God (Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit); for those who have been called according to his purposes." Romans 8:28
